My name is Don Rogers and I am the President the Alberta Woodsball League (A.W.L.). We are based out of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. This is our fourth year in operation, offering quality, competitive Paintball events not only for players from Rocky Mountain House, but surrounding communities as well.
We started play testing in 2004, and in 2005 we began to set up some rules. A few hundred thousand rounds later we had the basics of what was needed to make a workable woodsball rating system. We had 6 teams enter for the season in 2006, with 73 players, and finalized the rules. In 2007 we gave away over $10,000.00 in prizes The rules have changed and grown since then and so has the League.
In 2008 we began working with Shaun Langille of the Atlantic Woodsball League to form the Canadian Woodsball Championships. The C.W.C.'s has the best teams that each participating Province has to offer, compete for the right to say they are the Canadian Woodsball Champions.
The Alberta Woodsball League is a NON PROFIT sporting event.100% of money raised from entrance fees and paint sales are used for purchasing prizes and paying for event costs such as referees, safety equipment for refs, advertising/posting League scores, and the Award Ceremonies and trips for players to the Canadian Woodsball Championships.
What we do:
The Alberta Woodsball League tries to promote the safe, responsible use of paintball equipment in a competitive environment. We try to work to promote the sport of "Woodsball" and get some recognition for some of the sports Teams. To do this we co-ordinate with Paintball Fields that have "Woodsball" facilities and want to be Host locations for our League Divisions, and help promote them.
We also seek sponsors that will help provide items or services related to the sport of Woodsball and
make event participants aware of the products of our sponsors. Teams that are registered have their sponsors listed as well. We feel that it is important to make people aware of the community minded organizations and businesses who support emerging Amateur Sports and its participants.
About the League:
The Alberta Woodsball League gives Participants the chance to play competitive "Woodsball" style games for ratings and prizes. It gives people a chance to meet other paintball players from the surrounding areas as well as gives them the chance to meet players from other areas of the province.
Last year we helped our Provincial Champions; Sycosis, From Rocky Mountain House, compete in the Canadian Woodsball Championships, which were held in Halifax.
The A.W.L. is all about providing quality gaming events at a reasonable cost to the Participants.
We have managed to keep Division I entrance fees at $30.00 a Player* , and Division II fees around $10.00 or less per player!
We only use QUALITY paint at our events *Based on a full team roster of 15 players.
Who we are:
2009 Board of Directors
President: Don Rogers
Vice President: Dave Rogers
Dave has been a part of the organization from right back in the days of game testing and been the Head Referee for the Alberta Woodsball League for the last 3 years. His ongoing dedication to the safety of AWL Players and Officials, as well as his passion for the sport, let alone the numerous hours reffing not only for the AWL events, but other paintball organizations, make him a great choice for Vice President. He looks forward to seeing you on the field, and wishes all participating teams the best of luck in the upcoming season.
League Officials Representative: Terry Shields
Terry has been reffing the Alberta Woodsball League events for the last 2 years, and after passing the ref test with 100% both years, proved her knowledge of the AWL rules both on paper and on the field. Players who have had Terry as a ref know that they can count on her to make the right calls and keep the game running fair for everyone.
League Treasurer: Rossanna Purvis
Rossanna joined us in 2008 when we first became a non profit organization. Although a working mother, she still finds time to work with the AWL Board of Directors, and occasionally even make it out to the field.
League Secretary: Unconfirmed at this date
Land Liaison/Event Co-coordinator: Steve Stienman
Steve has been part of the League since back in the days of game testing. He has been a ref for the AWL for the last 3 years and co-ordinates with the land owners for the Board of Directors. Steve can usually be found reffing behind a camera trying to get footage of the players in action, and looks forward to seeing you in the upcoming season.
2009 League Players Representative Cam Gregory
Cam Played for Tactical Innovations in Division I last year and is looking forward to competing in the AWL again in the 2009 season. He represents the League players at Board meetings and brings players concerns or suggestions to the table to be discussed.
