Frequently Asked Questions

Most of this information can be found throughout the website, however we figured we would save you some surfing time and post the most common questions here.

Q: What is the minimum age to enter the Alberta Woodsball League?
A:  You have to be at least 12 years of age and have written permission from your parents or Legal Guardian to participate in AWL events. As well if you are under the Age of Consent (18 in Alberta) you MUST wear a throat protector.

Q: We are sponsored by a Paintball Store/Field and want to know about bringing our own paintballs.
A: Sorry, but ONLY league purchased paintballs can be used at an A.W.L. event. The league provides ALL paintballs used at our events, not the Host Field. This is how we pay for the League to operate.

Q: What kind of gear do you recommend to bring to an A.W.L. event ?
A: Being as our events are held outdoors I recommend bringing Sunscreen  a hat or other cover for your head and Bug Spray at least. As for paintball gear I recommend making sure that you have:
-A GOOD mask, preferably with a fan to avoid fogging up and replacement lenses. Your Mask is the MOST important part of your on-field gear. If you cannot see your surroundings or your Opponents then it really doesn't matter what kind of Marker you are using.  Make sure that your mask and lenses are in good working order and free of "nicks" and or scratches as these can seriously lower the level of protection that your Paintball Mask provides.
- A Throat Protector. There is a lot of close combat  as well as Full Auto fire in the A.W.L.. With 8 possible matches in a day, a Player doesn't want a stray paintball to end their day early.
- A "Can" or other protection for sensitive personal areas. Kinda explains itself.
- Gloves. ANY type of gloves. A paintball from close range off of a bare skin knuckle can be a  painful event, let alone crawling or sliding or any other such maneuvers in a forest environment.
-Tactical vest or some other form of body armor with the capability to carry spare Paintballs and HPA/CO2. There is nothing worse then running out of air or ammo on the field.
- Decent footwear. It goes without saying that running, jumping, sliding and other activities that require good traction are part of every game. I recommend footwear that offers good ankle support and decent traction. Nothing too heavy as you need to able to wear them all day.
- Depending on the Host Field, food and  refreshments. Some Host Fields have fire pits or BB Q's for participants to use, others have concession stands. Please check with your Division Host Field to see what arrangements are in place.

Q: How do we reserve a spot in the upcoming League Season for our Team?
A: Only Teams that participated in the previous League Season may reserve a spot in their Division Roster, this is to give first chance to Roster their Team in same Division that they competed in previously. Teams that do reserve a Team slot for the upcoming season must pay their entrance fees before the beginning of Open Registration. Once Open Registration has started it is "first come first served" for registering a Team for a Division.

Q: Will you ever have more than 9 teams in a Division?
A: NO. This year we are limiting the number of teams that may join Division I to allow for team advancement from Division II.

Q: Our Team is sponsored by one of the Leagues event sponsors or Host Fields. Is that going to be a conflict of interest?
A: Absolutely not. The Alberta Woodsball League is a separate entity with our own Board of Directors. We supply our own referees and an Ultimate Judge for the events to maintain standards and controls.

Q: Who provides the League Prizes and Awards?
A: The Alberta Woodsball League is responsible for all prizes and awards. These items may be provided by sponsors or purchased by the A.W.L.

Q: Do the winning Teams get to keep the trophies?
A:  The Division I Provincial Champions Cup belongs to the Alberta Woodsball League, however the winning team keeps it to be able to display it until game day 1 of the League where it will be brought to the event for display. It will then be returned to the League on game day 5.

Q: Who runs the Alberta Woodsball League?
A: The League has a Board of Directors that Governs the events and maintains the League. The Board consists of League Officials (The Ultimate Judge and the Head Referee) as well as representatives of the Host Fields and representatives of major sponsors. We take input from Player surveys as well as from the Host Fields to provide events that work for both the Players and the event Sponsors.

Q: How do we get to the Provincial Finals?
A: Only the top 3 Teams in each Division will receive an invite to play at the Provincial Finals. There is no cost to participate in the Finals for League members that qualify other than Paintballs and HPA/CO2 and other associated Field costs like concessions.

Q: What are the prizes for the League
A: As we are still working with Sponsors and Host Fields, prizes will not be listed until after Team registrations for the Season are confirmed. We will announce the prizes for the Season at the first Game Day for each Division, as well as in our "News" section of the website.

Q: Do you help Teams get sponsorships
A: Yes and no. We will write letters of recommendation for League Teams and co-ordinate with our Provincial Champions but we do not actively seek sponsors for League Teams.

Q: Who does our Team contact to get practice time for the League events.
A:  Contact your Host Field to arrange practice times. The cost of Field fees and paintballs are up to the discretion of the Host Field ( the Alberta Woodsball League has no say in those matters) but I am sure the Host Field will be happy make arrangements with your Team.
