Feb 12th 2009
Well another season is quickly approaching. With just over 90 days left before the first registration deadline we have gotten our spring updates ready. There are a couple of significant changes to the Alberta Woodsball League this year.
We will still be running two divisions this year. Division I is for organized teams looking to compete to earn the right to represent Alberta at the 2009 Canadian Woodsball Championships. Division II will be recreational, however Division I and Division II have had a major overhauls in format.
With the Alberta Woodsball League Division I being the only place to earn the right to compete in the Canadian Woodsball Championships for Alberta, it was decided that limiting the amount of teams that could compete in a season to only 6 in all of Alberta would not be fair. The first 6 teams with money could roster and lock out any other team from competing that year, regardless of skill.
We also looked at the 6 day consecutive score aspect. With rosters for the events locked in due to CWC rules, teams would have to be able to make all 6 game days to keep up their scores. That meant a lot of dedicated weekends to just AWL events. Teams would have to choose between entering the League or being able to attend different events through out the summer, such as operation Skyline Nation, Operation Overlord (BC) or other events, let alone gas or other travel costs to participate in each event.
Other organizations that are participating in this years CWCs are looking at provincial tournaments as well to allow more teams to compete to represent their provinces. With all this in mind, and after many phone calls and meetings the Alberta Woodsball League Board of Directors have made some decisions.
Division I has had the following changes:
- Opened Division I events to any team that believes it can compete at Division I levels of play.
- Changed the format from 6 consecutive Game Days to 6 one day events.
- Teams that place first from each of those 6 events will be invited to compete at the Provincial Finals.
- The winning team from the Provincial Finals (the 2009 Provincial Champions) will earn the right to Compete in the 2009 Canadian Woodsball Championships.
- There will only be ONE type of game used for all Division I events.
- H.P.A./Co2 costs now included in registration fees.
- Minimum age to participate in Division I is now 14 years or older with written permission to compete.
Division II has had the following changes:
- Rosters completely opened up, not locked in.
- No longer a Division I qualifier, so now is truly a recreational Division.
- May have as many players as they wish rostered on a Team , but still only 5 players on the field.
- There will be 3 game types played over the 6 consecutive events.
- H.P.A./Co2 costs now included in registration fees.
Teams that had paid entrance fees for the 2009 season have had them returned, and the new registration costs as well as the deadlines for event registration will be posted with this update.
We have some more League officials to announce as well. Congratulations to Steven Ross for making the ref squad and a welcome back to Ashley Robertson who will be returning to the AWL as a ref again this year. I would Also like to welcome Cameron Gregory, who joins the Board of Directors as this years Players Representative.
Jan 16 2009
Happy new year to everyone. I hope that you enjoyed your holidays. The AWL 2.6 Div I rules are now posted. There are only 3 game types now, Team Elimination, Capture the Flag, and 3 zone Capture. This has been done to be more compatible with the Canadian Woodsball Championships event.
We do have a couple of other announcements to make.
First off the Alberta Woodsball League Vice President, Devon Gant will be resigning his seat on the Board of Directors to pursue his career overseas. We wish him the best in luck and want him to know he will be missed both on, and off the field. We would like to welcome Dave "K.C."
Rogers as the new Vice President of the Alberta Woodsball Association.
Dave has been a part of the organization from right back in the days of game testing and been the Head Referee for the Alberta Woodsball League for the last 3 years. His ongoing dedication to the safety of AWL Players and Officials, as well as his passion for the sport, let alone the numerous hours reffing not only for the AWL events, but other paintball organizations, make him a great choice for Vice President. He looks forward to seeing you on the field, and wishes all participating teams the best of luck in the upcoming season.
Which brings us to our next announcement regarding the Board of Directors. Congratulations to Terry "Mouse" Shields, the new League Officials Representative. Terry has been reffing the Alberta Woodsball League events for the last 2 years, and after passing the ref test with 100% both years, proved her knowledge of the AWL rules both on paper and
on the field. Players who have had Terry as a ref know that they can
count on her to make the right calls and keep the game running fair for everyone.
We are still looking for refs for the League. Applicants must be over the age of 18 and be able to pass the AWL ref test. Applicants under the age of 18 may look for a "Ref in Training" position as long as they are 16 years of age or older. League events are held every second weekend. We will be looking for people to officiate Division I as well as Division II.
You will be given 3 chances to pass the ref test in 1 year.
Interested parties should contact Terry for more information at the
following e mail address: ref@albertawoodsball.org
The CWC website link does not work at this time. The CWC web page has been removed and is being replaced with the new Canadian Woodsball Championship website with forums. The new site is being designed and hosted by Dana Wallert of DW Web Solutions http://www.dwwebsolutions.com/
Dana was asked to do the site because of her quality of work, and that fact that since our updates are time sensitive (rule adjustments or other important updates) we required a reliable provider of services that can get the job done in a timely manner. Look for the new website to be up hopefully in early February.
Its that time again where we confirm and seek sponsors for the Alberta Woodsball League. Richard at MR paintball in Calgary has confirmed his continued support for what we are trying to do. I cannot stress enough how much he has helped our organization. Thank you to Mike and Richard at ME Paintball !
We are currently working out final details for this years sponsorship from Tippmann Sports
http://www.tippmann.com/canada/default.aspx
and should have the confirmed list of items being donated soon.
We will have more information regarding other sponsors of this years Alberta Woodsball League posted on the website as the agreements are confirmed and finalized.
I do have some unfortunate news to report. We had a hard drive failure and were unable to recover most of the photos and video of the 2008 season. Any players or spectators that have copies please contact us.
We will have our next update in early February.

There will only be 6 teams per Division this year. This is to allow teams to move into Division I from Division II. Invitations are being sent out to a number of teams that are capable of playing in Division I and representing Alberta at the 2009 Canadian Woodsball Championships. If your team did not receive an invitation to compete in Division I and you feel as though you got what it takes please contact me as soon as possible.
Teams will be officially rostered once League dues have been paid to enter that Division, with Team Slots being assigned as requested once registered. That means if you want team spot 3 playing schedule you better pay up before someone else who wants it does.

I would like to thank those people who have already shown an interest in officiating the 2009 events. More names will be posted as Refs pass the AWL ref test. We are still accepting applications for spots on the 2009 Board of Directors and will announce the new board members on the Forums.

As noted on the Home page, Tactical Innovations will be the new Host Field for the Alberta Woodsball League. Tactical Innovations officially took over the old Clearwater Paintball Fields yesterday afternoon.
The guys at T.I. , Mike, Cam and Dave, are expanding. They offer everything from tactical paintball training seminars, designing and hosting specialty scenario events, to full operation of a paintball field. They will also showcase some of their ORIGINAL paintball products and designs at predetermined events.
Tactical Innovations Paintball Field will be offering new management, new games and new fields available to the public next year, as they spend the rest of this year redesigning and rebuilding the Paintball Field. They will be offering 120 acres of playing area, with around 80 acres of Woodsball Fields and 40 acres of speedball and specialty scenario courses when complete!
They have a few introductory events planned for the remainder of the 2008 season, such as "Operation Countdown to Chaos" Sept 13th, and other events to be announced on their website (Under Construction). They will also be taking bookings for rentals and special events, as well as hosting Tactical Paintball Training Seminars.
